Orbital - Orbital (1993)

Orbital are, in my opinion, part of the pillars of 90s electronic music, in particular techno. They are quite well known for their tracks "Chime", "Halcyon + On + On", "The Saint" and others. Their first two albums were both titled "Orbital", and so to differentiate them they are referred to as the "Green Album" and the "Brown Album". We're going to discuss the "Brown Album" here, simply because I think it is their best album. If you're not convinced, listen to the sequence from "Lush 3-1" to "Remind" and reformulate your opinion.

Firstly, this album features the previously mentioned "Halcyon + On + On". However, this track is actually a remix of a previous track released by the band, titled "Halcyon". This track appeared on the Radiccio EP, alongside three other tracks. This EP was released less than a year before the Brown Album.

Another noteworthy bonus track is "Semi Detached", which was released on the Trance Europe Express compilation in September 1993, not long after the release of the Brown Album. As well as this, the song "Impact (The Earth is Burning)" received a remix by Orbital themselves for the US market. Orbital also did a Peel Session, a 20 minute set on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show, half of which featured remixes of stuff from Orbital, the other half remixing stuff from their following album Snivilisation, which you can also read about. All of these would later be released on the Diversions compilation album in 1994. "Semi Detached" would also later be remixed and placed on Snivilisation as "Attached".
