New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies

New Order have a bit of a reputation when it comes to their singles. Their hit "Blue Monday", the most successful 12" single ever released, never appeared on the original version of this album, despite being released just two months before. In fact, New Order's first seven singles did not appear on any of the band's albums until 1987, on the Substance compilation of the singles they'd released up to that point. So, what singles from around the time of this album should we include? Well, first, the aforementioned "Blue Monday" and its B-side, "The Beach". The next single is "Confusion", for which the B-sides were the "Confused Beats" and "Rough Mix" versions, as well as the instrumental, which I don't think we really need to include (and can't fit on the disc). After that is "Thieves Like Us", with its B-side "Lonesome Tonight", and another track related to it, "Murder". The final inclusion is "Video 5 8 6", a 22-minute instrumental composition, made for the opening of their record label's nightclub, the Haçienda. An early version of the album track "5 8 6", it was played live there in May 1982, a year before the album's release, before eventually being officially released in 1997.
